Bernhard Roetzel is the author of several books on elegant menswear and gives seminars on clothing and the correct forms. In the first part of the interview with the gentleman -blog, he reveals how he "style guru" came to his nickname, from which the basic equipment consists of a gentleman, and what is his favorite fashion accessories.
Mr. Roetzel, apply and describe themselves as a "style guru". Who did you miss this nickname, and how did it happen?
BR: The title came to their friends, of course, but fun. I have the designation would be used more frequently self-deprecating and now she's almost official. Although I of course do not want to hurt the feelings of Catholics.
A style Pope Amused occasionally about the clothes of other men, or twisted you rather your stomach when you see men in shorts and sandals worn white tennis socks?
BR: I've been watching all this, it concerns me personally but any more than a doctor is affected by a medical history, about which he hears on television. I may have little missionary zeal fashionable things.
Nevertheless, you have to fashion your world famous book " gentleman. Handbook of classic men's fashion "is written. It has since been translated into 18 languages. Do you secretly expected this success, and how do you explain the success?
BR: I have neither expected nor hoped for the appearance of the book's success in 1999. As the success then became apparent, I am of course very happy. Even today, it is a great feeling when I get emails from readers from all parts of the world. Explaining the success is difficult, especially for the author of the book. Maybe it's the mixture of detail, humorous and ironic writing style and obvious enthusiasm of the author.
Stand your book title "gentleman. Handbook of classic men's fashion "fixed from the outset?
Not at all. He was born in publishing, first more ironic - as my title "style guru" - then it became serious. At first I was very skeptical. But as I lay beside it with my assessment.
They are not only an author but also keep special seminars on clothing and dress code . What can you learn (s) there?
BR: There is the Goethe-word "You only see what you know." In the seminars, you learn what to see. And I will tell of course spontaneously very many details and anecdotes, which then very spice up the whole.
Which seminars are best visited?
The seminar on the fundamentals of the classic style is very popular in different variations. I have kept it before hundreds of people in companies and at public seminars.
How is the fashionable basic equipment of a gentleman together?
BR: That each very much depends on the circumstances. Maybe a dark blue suit , a sport jacket, a tuxedo, a pair of gray trousers, two to three pairs of welted shoes , 10 shirts, some ties, sweaters, boat shoes, chinos and corduroy or Moleskinhosen for leisure, a Covert Coat, a trench coat and maybe a wax jacket.
What role do the shoes?
BR: Good shoes are of course very important for the gentleman look. With the wrong shoes you do not belong to the club to do so.
Guess if one has a tailored suit, over the wherewithal?
BR: A custom-made suit from a good tailor is the optimum. But you have to have a sense of manual work and the ritual, otherwise it is a waste of money. Above all, you have to know exactly what you want. This is the weak in many men.
A gentleman is characterized in no small part by his clothes. Can you be a full-fledged gentleman even without expensive wardrobe?
BR: Of course. The wardrobe of a gentleman need not necessarily be expensive. Why are there Ebay and second-hand stores? And of course, naked in bed.
And what is your personal favorite fashion accessories ?
BR: I like bold color in unexpected places, for example in stockings, suspenders, or the lining of suits. Where actually is, of course, old hat. But it's fun.
